Warm Up With Some Cold Brews

Warm Up With Some Cold Brews

Winter has finally decided rear it’s cold, snowy head. With weather predictions saying that we may reach below zero this weekend, we here at the shop are preparing ourselves. We have a nice showcase of beers this week to prepare you for this cold snap, and make the wait for spring more bearable.

Samuel Adams Cold Snap
American White Ale
5.3% Alcohol by Volume

Stirring from the haze of winter, this refreshing unfiltered white ale awakens its smooth wheat with the bright snap of spring spices. From the subtle sweetness of orange peel and plum to the peppery bite of fresh ground coriander, the blend of spices creates just the right refreshing kick to signal the spring is on its way.

Available in 6-packs: $9.49

Brooklyn Defender IPA
West Coast-Style Indian Pale Ale
6.7% Alcohol by Volume

The Defender is constantly vigilant, standing guard over all those who dare to create, to dream, and to drink great beer. Defender IPA is a bright, juicy, West Coast-style IPA takes on a reddish twist from a dash of roasted malt. Bold, fruity, hop bitterness and an intensely resinous nose lead the way into a dry finish that blazes the trail for your next sip.

Available in 6-packs: $10.99

Saranac Disruption Nitro
Nitrogen-infused English Brown Ale
Alcohol by Volume: 7.0%

Disruption is a nitro infused Brown Ale, brewed with a distinctive mix of caramel and chocolate malts. Northern Brewer and Eastern Kent Goldings hops balance the deep maltiness, imparting their own rich earthy-fruitiness.

Disruption was once a wild, ravenous black bear but you mustn’t fret. The brewers over at Saranac have tamed this mighty beast: the nitro not only gives this bear a smooth mouthfeel with a creamy finish, but it also accentuates the sweet malty character of the grains for greater depth in cocoa, caramel and coffee flavor. Pour disruption down the center of the glass and marvel at its cascading beauty. Get ready to experience the dark side of this disruptive brown ale.

Available chilled in a 4-pack of cans: $9.99

Brooklyn Pilsner
German-style Pilsner
5.1% Alcohol by Volume
Brooklyn Pilsner is a refreshing golden lager beer, brewed in the style favored by New York’s pre-prohibition brewers. In the 1840’s, the pilsner style emerged from central Europe to become the world’s most popular style of beer. Like its ancestors, Brooklyn Pilsner is traditionally brewed from the finest German two-row barley malts. German-grown Perle and Hallertauer hops provide a crisp, snappy bitterness and fresh, floral aroma. The flavor of the malt comes through in the finish. Unlike mass-marketed so-called pilsners, Brooklyn Pilsner does not contain cheap fillers such as corn or rice, nor does it contain any preservatives or stabilizers. Brooklyn Pilsner is the real thing.
Available in 6-packs: $9.99
The Great Pumpkin Ale
New England Pumpkin Ale
Alcohol by Volume: 5.4%

Cambridge Brewing Company’s Great Pumpkin Ale is brewed with 180 pounds of fresh, locally grown, organic sugar pumpkins in each 10-barrel batch, and it has an appropriately distinct orange hue. The subtle fresh pumpkin flavor is enhanced by the addition of traditional autumn spices, and is guaranteed to please even the most finicky of harvest-time ale fanatics.

Available chilled or warm in a 22OZ Bomber bottle: $7.99

Samuel Adam’s Merry Maker
Gingerbread and Spice Infused Stout

Alcohol By Volume: 9%
Available chilled or warm in a 22OZ Bomber: $6.49

Valentine’s Day Specials!

We have lots of great gift ideas for this Valentine’s Day – for ladies & gentlemen alike!

Free rose with the purchase of any Champagne featured here or the Pasqua Passimento! We will also have some Roses available for purchase.

Pasqua Passimento 2011 – $14.99 Plus a free Rose

Label features the “Lover’s Wall” from Verona, hometown of Romeo & Juliet! | Following the Amarone winemaking technique of appassimento, this wine is 40% Merlot, 30% Corvina, and 30% Croatina. You would think that air-dried Merlot would be over the top, but this expression is reigned in by the natural freshness of the two indigenous grapes. The wine is a lovely shade of garnet and shows thick, luscious concentration. Its aromas are one-dimensional but very lively: black cherry, brown sugar, and exotic spice steal the show.

2013 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 96 points!
Regularly $74.99 | Sale Price $59.99
Order now – before it sells out – and receive 10% case discount! (Net: $53.99/bottle)
“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature from Chappellet, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, is a stunner. Moreover, it’s a pretty realistic value for a top-notch Cabernet from California. Of course, it’s a great vintage and they’ve nailed it. Deep ruby/purple color, notes of blueberry, blackberry, with cassis, camphor and spring flowers, the wine is full-bodied, powerful (14.8% natural alcohol), layered with supple tannins and a long, long finish. This wine can be drunk now, or cellared for 25 or more years.”

Incredible Italian Wines Beyond Pinot Grigio!

High-quality Italian wines go far beyond the ever-popular Pinot Grigio…
Want to try something new? Check out some of our favorites below!

2013 Catapanus Bombino Bianco – $15.99

An accurate pruning at the early ripening stage and late harvesting give this wine a rich and noble structure which holds its sensory qualities. Straw yellow in color, with anise and tropical fruits dominating its fragrance. Dry; ideal for fish, crustaceans, as an aperitif or for the whole meal.

2012 Azienda Agricola Obiz Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso – $14.99

Ruby-red colour with hints of purple, it takes on garnet shades with time; the bouquet presents hints of blackberry, underwood, and light elegant spices; a dry, warm and full-bodied wine, with soft tannins and a long-lasting, pleasantly bitterish aftertaste. Ideal for hearty meat dishes, poultry, stews and game.

Campo al Mare Bolgheri Rosso 2011
R. Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 90 points!
Regularly $32.99 | Sale Price $19.99
The 2011 Bolgheri Rosso is a blend of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. This is a high-voltage red wine with amazing purity and intensity. This plush and opulent expression shows loads of dark mocha, softly roasted espresso, cherry and ripe blackberry fruit. The wine is what an Italian would call an “international red” with extremely soft chocolate on the close. It’s ready to drink now. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2019.

2011 Angelo Gaja Sori Tildin
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 95 pts
The exciting 2011 Sori San Lorenzo is a wine of enormous beauty and grace. Gaia GajaThe 2011 Sori Tildin is always a wine of great aromatic potential and the 2011 vintage is no exception. This Barbaresco-inspired red bursts from the glass with enormous verve and personality. Mineral notes of pencil shaving and brimstone come on the heels of red fruit and red currant. Drink: 2018-2035.

6-bottle wood case: $1,799.94 per case (net: $299.99/bottle)

2011 Angelo Gaja Sori San Lorenzo
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 96 pts
The exciting 2011 Sori San Lorenzo is a wine of enormous beauty and grace. Gaia Gaja classifies her three single vineyard Langhe Nebbiolo wines as follows: Costa Russi is “flowers;” Sori Tildin is “fruit;” and San Lorenzo is “plant” (with more structure and a more compact feel). San Lorenzo does indeed boast a strong mineral component of pencil shavings and crushed granite, followed by red cherry and soft spice. The wine’s tannins start off harder than the other wines, but soften with time. Drink: 2018-2040.

6-bottle wood case: $1,799.94 per case (net: $299.99/bottle)

2010 Angelo Gaja Barolo Sperss
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 96 pts
The 2010 Sperss delivers a broad approach to the bouquet with bold flavors of red fruit, spice and milk chocolate that caress the palate. The wine sports a broad frame with beautiful fruit filling at its core. The tannins in Sperss are very firm and structured and this wine won’t be ready for five to ten more years. Drink: 2018-2040.

6-bottle wood case: $989.94 per case (net: $164.99/bottle)
Regularly $249.99 per bottle!

2009 Angelo Gaja Costa Russi
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 94 pts
The exciting 2011 Sori San Lorenzo is a wine of enormous beauty and grace. The overt fruit and depth typical of Costa Russi comes through in spades in the 2009. Plums, black cherries, chocolate and new leather form the core of this round, expressive Costa Russi. As beautiful as this is, the 2009 remains deeply marked by the vintage. There is plenty of beauty and richness in the glass, but not quite the sheer visceral thrill of the very best Costa Russis. Although I wouldn’t open any of the 2009 single-vineyard wines in the near-term, the Costa Russi is the most expressive of the three. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

6-bottle wood case: $1,799.94 per case (net: $299.99/bottle)

2009 Angelo Gaja Sori San Lorenzo
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated 96 pts
Gaja’s 2009 Sori San Lorenzo is very typical in its expression. Layers of juicy dark cherries, menthol, spices, tar, licorice and graphite flow across the palate as this powerful, masculine wine opens up in the glass. Balsamic infused aromas and flavors develop in the glass, adding considerable complexity and the signature of this great terroir, indisputably one of Piemonte’s very finest. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

6-bottle wood case: $1,799.94 per case (net: $299.99/bottle)

Duckhorn Vineyards’ Three Palms Vineyard Merlot!

Duckhorn Vineyards’ Three Palms Vineyard Merlot 2012
$99.99 / bottle with 15% off 6-bottle case (net: $84.95 /bottle)

“The Best California Merlot Ever” according to Nick Passmore of Forbes Magazine!
Since the inaugural vintage in 1978, Duckhorn Vineyards has been proud to craft a vineyard-designate bottling from Three Palms. One of California’s first single-vineyard Merlots, this full-bodied wine reflects Three Palms’ unique terroir and has been a consistent benchmark for New World Merlot. Named for its three iconic palm trees, the warm, up valley vineyard features lean soils that cause the vines to send their roots deep in search of nutrients, producing an intense, age-worthy wine with complex fruit and mineral layers. The 2012 Merlot is a classic expression of Three Palms Vineyard, with vibrant red fruit bursting through on the entry, followed by layers of licorice, wet stone and earth that reveal themselves on the mid-palate. Though the tannins are prominent, adding gravitas to this iconic Merlot, there is a lovely refinement to them that beautifully accentuates the flavors of blueberry, warm spice cake and Santa Rosa plum.

Excerpts from Nick Passmore’s write-up in Forbes Magazine below! Follow this link to read the whole piece!

In Napa Valley’s  Mediterranean climate it’s easy to make big, ripe boring Merlot, devoid of personality. But in the right location, and with the right approach, it can deliver very fine wine, and in one special vineyard, truly wonderful wine, the best California Merlot there is: Duckhorn Vineyards’s Three Palms vineyard in Calistoga. This reaffirms what every winemaker knows in his or her heart: great wine is all about location, location, location.

Alex Ryan, CEO of Duckhorn, explains what makes Three Palms so special: “It’s a very, very rocky site, but in between the stones is a lot of loam and sand so it also has an element of nutritional value, so what you have is stress, but healthy vines. If you take that unique situation… In most Napa Valley vineyards you either have stony hillside vineyards that have stressed vines, or you have loamy, fertile, valley floor soils that make lush, nice wines but not intense wines. Here we have a unique blend of the two.”

Three Palms is today one of the most celebrated vineyards in Napa Valley. “The Uptons got really lucky when they picked this site.” Alex Ryan explains. “It was a cheap piece of property because it didn’t grow a lot of grass, so it wasn’t good for dairy and they were able to see through that and say ‘Yes, this may have some potential for grape vines that nobody else wanted to mess with because it was so difficult, so rocky, so expensive to manage. But, for luxury winemaking, it turned out to be the magic potion.”

In many ways Three Palms is not that dissimilar to many other high-end Napa Merlots: it has tons of lush ripe fruit, is certainly extracted but not overly so by Napa standards, has pronounced but ripe tannins that requires long aging, but all this you can find elsewhere. Three Palms goes beyond this with its unique heightened intensity.

Almost everyone has heard of Champagne from France and Prosecco from Italy.  Don’t miss this stunning, great value Methode Champenoise from Italy!

A history lasting centuries, the one of Franciacorta: a sole word defining the territory, the method of production and the wine itself. The present geographic boundaries, included within Bergamo and Brescia, match the ones of the county of Viscontean age, taken and confirmed from the Serenissima Republic (Venice) in the XV century. In the XVI century this area is already known for its own vineyards, that benefit from the mild climate, specific of Iseo lake. The term Franciacorta recalls the Frank courts and, after the arrival of the Cluniacenses monks, the territory enjoyed the free trade (curate francae). Nowadays Franciacorta is cultural and natural heritage, rich of charm and attractiveness. A territory to discover, to savour and to inhale.
